Sacro Monte di Varallo
The monumental complex of Sacro Monte stands at 608 metres on a rocky hill overlooking Varallo and offers very impressive views not only of the city but of the whole of Valsesia. It is the oldest of the Italian sacred mounts; it was created in 1491 by Bernardino Caimi, and was a model for the other complexes that later sprang up along the Alpine chain. It consists of forty-four frescoed chapels and a Basilica, wonderfully immersed in the greenery of a natural park.
The itinerary unfolds along streets and small squares, enriched by chapels with over four thousand frescoed figures and about eight hundred life-size wooden and polychrome terracotta statues depicting scenes from the Gospels. Sacro Monte, also known as the ‘New Valsesian Jerusalem‘, is a marvellous place, a masterpiece of art and faith recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003.
